World Cup Debutant Ayyoub Bouaddi Joins Opta’s Opening-Round Best XI

Morocco Teenager Makes Strong First Impression on Football’s Biggest Stage

Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi has earned a place in Opta’s Team of the World Cup 2026 Opening Round after producing an eye-catching display against Brazil in the group stage.

The 18-year-old was among the standout performers in Morocco’s 1-1 draw with the five-time world champions on June 13. Despite making his World Cup debut, Bouaddi played with remarkable composure and looked comfortable competing against some of the sport’s most established names.

His selection in Opta’s opening-round XI places him alongside several internationally recognized stars and highlights the growing reputation of one of Morocco’s brightest young talents.

Midfield Presence Helps Morocco Match Brazil

Bouaddi played a central role in Morocco’s ability to compete with Brazil throughout the match. The Lille midfielder remained heavily involved from start to finish, recording 87 touches of the ball, a total exceeded only by Brazil’s central defenders.

His influence was also reflected in his passing statistics. Bouaddi completed 60 of his 66 passes, finishing the match with an accuracy rate of 90.7 percent. His calm distribution and ability to retain possession helped Morocco control key moments and move the ball effectively through midfield.

The performance demonstrated a level of maturity rarely seen from players making their World Cup debut, particularly against opposition of Brazil’s calibre.

Historic Achievement for the Young Midfielder

The match also saw Bouaddi reach a notable milestone. According to Opta, he became the second-youngest player since 1966 to complete at least 50 passes in a World Cup fixture.

He achieved the feat at 18 years and 254 days old, adding another impressive statistic to a performance that caught the attention of football observers around the world.

Such numbers underline the confidence Bouaddi showed throughout the contest and reinforce why he is regarded as one of the game’s emerging prospects.

More Than Just a Passing Game

While his passing accuracy drew praise, Bouaddi also made an impact with the ball at his feet. He attempted five dribbles during the match, second only to fellow Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi, who recorded eight.

His willingness to drive forward and challenge defenders gave Morocco an additional attacking outlet. Combining technical quality with positional discipline, Bouaddi contributed at both ends of the pitch and maintained a high level of consistency throughout the encounter.

Included Among World Football’s Biggest Names

Opta’s Team of the Opening Round features a collection of players who made a significant impact during the tournament’s first set of matches.

Bouaddi was selected in midfield alongside United States international Weston McKennie. The attacking positions were occupied by Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Côte d’Ivoire forward Yann Diomandé.

The defensive unit included Antonee Robinson, Harry Souttar, Roberto Lopes, and Michael Murillo, while Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha completed the lineup.

Attention Growing Across Europe

Bouaddi’s performance has further strengthened interest from several leading European clubs. Reports have linked the Moroccan midfielder with teams including Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain.

Praise has also come from within his current club environment. Veteran striker Olivier Giroud recently spoke positively about Bouaddi’s confidence and maturity, qualities that were on full display against Brazil.

As Morocco prepares for the upcoming World Cup matches against Scotland and Haiti, attention will remain focused on the teenager. After announcing himself on the global stage, Bouaddi now has the opportunity to build on a memorable start and continue his rise during the tournament.
