Gunfire Damages Surrey Home in Bear Creek Neighbourhood, Police Probe Possible Extortion Link

Police in Surrey are examining an overnight shooting at a residential property in the city’s Bear Creek neighbourhood, an incident investigators believe may be connected to an extortion attempt. While the home sustained damage from gunfire, authorities confirmed that no one was hurt during the incident.

Officers were dispatched shortly after 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, following reports of shots fired in the 8600 block of Galway Crescent. The call prompted an immediate response from patrol units, who secured the area upon arrival. Police determined that multiple rounds had struck the exterior of a single-family residence, causing visible damage to the structure.

At the time of the shooting, the home was occupied. Despite the danger posed by the gunfire, all residents escaped without physical harm. Investigators noted that the lack of injuries was fortunate given the circumstances and the late-night timing of the incident, when occupants were likely asleep.

Early findings suggest the shooting was not random. Police indicated the incident is believed to be linked to extortion activity, a type of crime that has drawn increasing attention from law enforcement in recent months. In such cases, suspects may use intimidation tactics, including property damage, to pressure victims. Officers have not released details about any demands that may have been made, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The scene was examined for evidence throughout the morning hours. Investigators collected shell casings and documented damage to the home while canvassing the surrounding area for surveillance footage that could assist in identifying those responsible. Residents in nearby homes reported being startled awake by loud bangs, though many were unsure at first what they had heard.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area during the early morning hours, or who may have dashcam or security camera footage from around the time of the shooting, to come forward. Even small details, investigators say, could help establish a timeline or lead to a suspect description.

No arrests have been announced, and police have not confirmed whether this incident is connected to other extortion-related cases in the region. Patrols in the neighbourhood were increased following the shooting as a precaution, and officers reassured residents that the investigation remains active.

As the inquiry continues, police emphasized that public cooperation will play a key role in moving the case forward and determining responsibility for the gunfire that disrupted the quiet Surrey neighbourhood.
