Surrey, B.C., was rocked by an early morning incident on Sunday when police responded to a shooting linked to alleged extortion. Officers from the Surrey Police Service (SPS) acted quickly to bring three suspects into custody after shots were fired at a home in the Crescent Beach neighbourhood. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the home sustained gunfire damage, and a small fire by a fence had to be extinguished by firefighters.
The incident occurred around 3:50 a.m. PT near Crescent Road and 132 Street. Police responding to reports of gunfire discovered the damage to the property and quickly began tracking the suspects. A “suspect vehicle” was identified in the vicinity, but the occupants fled on foot.
Sgt. Lindsey Houghton provided details at a Sunday afternoon news conference, explaining that the suspects were located after entering a rideshare vehicle near 28 Avenue and 140 Street. “We believe that [the rideshare vehicle] was obtained not that long before our officers were able to locate it,” said Houghton. She confirmed that the vehicle was stopped safely and all three individuals were taken into custody without incident.
Currently, no weapons have been recovered, and the men have not been formally charged. SPS investigators are working to determine the suspects’ connection to the shooting. In addition to the arrests, two vehicles have been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of extortion-related crimes affecting South Asian communities in Surrey and B.C.’s Lower Mainland. Business owners and residents have reported receiving letters, calls, or messages demanding cash under threat, creating significant fear and disruption.
The Surrey Police Service has a proactive program called Project Assurance, which aims to patrol residential and commercial areas targeted by extortion. By increasing police presence and awareness, the initiative seeks to prevent further criminal activity and reassure the community that these threats are taken seriously.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting or suspicious activity to come forward. CCTV or dashcam footage from the Crescent Beach area around the time of the incident could be vital to the investigation. Residents are encouraged to contact Surrey police through their non-emergency number if they have details that may assist the ongoing inquiry.
With these arrests, Surrey police hope to disrupt extortion networks and reinforce public safety in the neighbourhood. As the investigation continues, the community remains vigilant while authorities work to prevent further incidents.
